Durant leads Thunder past Nuggets
|
|
DENVER (AP) — Kevin Durant (FSY) scored 32 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 101-94 Tuesday night in a possible first-round playoff preview.
Russell Westbrook added 18 points and James Harden (FSY) 13 as the Thunder all but secured home-court advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs, building a four-game lead over the Nuggets with five games left, including a rematch Friday night in Oklahoma City.
BOX SCORE: Thunder 101, Nuggets 94
SPURS: Back on track with win over Hawks
POWER RANKINGS: Spurs holding at fifth despite recent slide
This was the first win by the Thunder in Denver since the SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City in the beginning of the 2008-09 season. The franchise had lost seven straight games in Denver by an average of 19.3 points, its last win here coming on March 28, 2007.

Bucs in the running for HBO's 'Hard Knocks'
|
|
According to several reports, the Bucs are among the leading candidates to be the next team featured on the cable network's behind-the-scenes training camp series. At least six other teams are among those also being considered.
No decision is expected until later in the spring. Currently, the NFL players are locked out in an ongoing labor dispute with the league's team owners.
The show chronicled the New York Jets last summer. In previous years, the program showcased the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs.
The Bucs made a surprising run at the playoffs last season, winning ten games and just missing out on the postseason.
In addition to head coach Raheem Morris, the team boasts up-and-coming players in quarterback Josh Freeman, running back LeGarrette Blount and wide receiver Mike Williams.

NFL Lockout: Blank sends letter to fans
|
|
Falcons owner Arthur Blank contended that the owners bargained in good faith with the NFLPA in an open letter to fans, that is posted on the team’s website.
“As you probably know, last Friday the NFL’s mediated talks with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) ended without a new collectively bargained agreement, and on Saturday a lockout commenced,” Blank writes. “Neither of these events were desired outcomes, as commissioner (Roger) Goodell and our negotiating committee had worked diligently and tirelessly to reach a new agreement through the mediation process over the last three weeks.”
Blank address the fact that fans want to know about the 2011 tickets that they have purchase and the investments they made during the playoffs for two rounds of tickets.
“The most important thing you should know is that we remain committed to reaching an agreement that is fair to both sides and does not disrupt the 2011 season,” Blank writes. “We negotiated in good faith with the NFLPA, and we are prepared to re-enter negotiations at any time . . .the current status of the collective bargaining agreement will not disrupt our preparation for the 2011 season.”
He notes that general manager Thomas Dimitroff and his staff are preparing for the NFL Draft, which will be held April 28-30.

Coach Phil Jackson says offense, not defense, is fueling Lakers'
|
|
http://zhegehaoguo.insanejournal.com/
The Lakers have held opponents to 90.8 points per game while going 4-0 since the All-Star break, but Jackson says it's been less about improved defense and more a product of the team's ability to impose a slower pace on games with its offense.Lakers guard Kobe Bryant looks downcourt in transition against the Thunder during the first half Sunday.Reporting from Minneapolis — The Lakers' four-game winning streak since the All-Star game seems attributable to their stifling defense, which has held opposing teams to 90.8 points a game in that stretch.
Or maybe not — at least in the eyes of Lakers Coach Phil Jackson.
He sees it more as a result of an effective offense by his team"I think it's the pace of the game that we're trying to establish," Jackson said. "We're not forcing the activity right now. When Matt [Barnes] comes back, we'll probably pick the speed up in the game a little bit. But right now, we're playing at . . . pretty much our [moderate] pace."
Jackson said the pace has enabled the Lakers to reduce their opponents' possessions and allowed the Lakers to shoot a higher percentage.
The Lakers have given up more than 100 points in only one of the four victories, and it took the Portland Trail Blazers an overtime to score 101.
"We're not hurrying to a licking, as I say," Jackson said.
Barnes not ready
Jackson said Barnes, still recovering from right knee surgery, got up and down the court "pretty good" in the team's four-on-four, full-court practice Monday at the Target Center, but not enough to play Tuesday night against the Timberwolves.http://fearheller.blog.co.uk/
Barnes still has to get through "traffic" in a five-on-five session, Jackson said.
"He's getting close," Jackson said. "He ran well."
The Lakers probably will take Wednesday off when they return home from the two-game trip and practice again Thursday at the team's training facility.
The Lakers will play the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday at Staples Center.
Bryant's technical tally
Kobe Bryant picked up his 12th technical foul of the season Sunday in Oklahoma City against the Thunder.
If a player gets 16 technical fouls, he is suspended for one game and fined $5,000.
With 21 games left in the regular season, Bryant will have to be careful the rest of the way.
Bryant, who didn't shoot a free throw during Sunday's game, said he was surprised referee Steve Javie gave him a technical foul.
"I really didn't say much of anything," Bryant said after the game.
Loving the double-double
Minnesota power forward Kevin Love, the former UCLA star who made the All-Star team this season, has recorded a double-double in points and rebounds in 46 consecutive games.
He is closing in on Moses Malone's NBA-record streak of 51 consecutive games, spanning the 1978-79 and '79-80 seasons.
"He gets a lot of numbers," Jackson said about Love, who is averaging 21 points and a league-high 15.5 rebounds per game. "He's a guy that really goes after rebounds. [Love] gets all the missed free throws, the ones at the end of the quarter, those kinds. He gets a lot of numbers. It's quite significant. It's something that will happen."
Love had 23 points and 24 rebounds against the Lakers on Nov. 9. However, 10 days later the Lakers held him scoreless, with seven rebounds, in 34 minutes — the last game in which Love failed to record a double-double.

Annapolis residents 'stunned' over incendiary device in governor
|
|
Annapolis residents are used to their city being the center of attention — as the home of the State House and Naval Academy, it has hosted frequent presidential visits and a Middlde East peace summit.
But when streets filled with emergency equipment and TV trucks Thursday because a flash of fire and smoke came from a package sent to the governor, jaws dropped.
"We are kind of stunned that it happened here," said Marta Staples, who works at a jewelry store around the corner from the Jeffrey Building, where a mailroom worker was injured in the incident.
"None of us know really what's going on," Staples said. What snippets of information she got at Tilghman Co. Jewelers came from people who walked into the store in the historic district after seeing yellow crime scene tape blocking off Francis Street, where the government building sits.

The incendiary device at the Jeffrey Building was one of two that ignited Thursday at state government buildings. Another was sent to the Maryland Department of Transportation headquarters in Hanover.
As the sun fell, people hurrying home to escape the dropping temperature said they found it unsettling to learn that a building in downtown Annapolis, an area often called quaint for its narrow brick-paved streets with flags flying, had been a target.
"I think it's scary that happened," said Mary Ann Donaghy, who was heading to her home in nearby Murray Hill. "You just never know."
TV trucks were still out, but the crime scene tape and cluster of investigators' SUVs were gone.
It was a far cry from the early afternoon when a helicopter hovered overhead.
Then, Francis Street, a skinny thoroughfare connecting State Circle — and the State House itself — to the Main Street business and tourist hub was stuffed with emergency equipment, investigators' vehicles, and news media tripods. TV trucks lined the circle.
Even after crime scene tape came down around 2:30 p.m., the street remained impassable for an hour except by foot, as a city fire and explosives truck and other vehicles filled it.
Residents have had to deal with road closings before — but mainly as the result of visits from dignitaries. Last summer, first lady Michelle Obama toured the State House and went to the Naval Academy, a trip that led to roads being blocked and a small crowd craning necks for a glimpse of her.
And in 2007, the Naval Academy campus was home to a Middle East peace summit, addressed by President George W. Bush and his secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice.
Thursday, officials kept the action around the State House so quiet that some passersby were clueless.
"We heard some sirens, and the next we knew there were police cars," said Melanie Murphy, who operates the Annapolis Pottery, which is on the corner almost adjacent to the Jeffrey Building.
"We thought, are we setting that off?" she said. The store has three kilns for firing pottery.
After learning of the incendiary device, she realized that "nobody was panicking." Still, her phone rang with calls from worried out-of-town family and friends who heard about the incident on the news.
